Lulu.com author has “One Foot in the Black”

May 19, 2008 (Raleigh, NC) – After experiencing first-hand several wildfires while he lived in Malibu, including one that scorched his front door, attorney turned Lulu.com author Kurt Kamm gained respect for those who serve in the local firefighting community and put his new interest down on the page.  Using Lulu.com, the premier online self-publishing platform, Kamm was able to turn his debut novel One Foot in the Black into a project that not only fulfilled his goal to become a published author but also gave back to the community to whom he is dedicated.

While Kamm was researching those that serve in the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LAC), he came up with the idea for his debut novel, One Foot in the Black, which is a coming-of age story about a young man who is news to the LAC Fire department.  “Firefighters are the most dedicated and selfless people I’ve ever met,” says Kamm. “I’m intrigued with the firefighter mentality and working with these guys led to writing this book.” One Foot in the Black is a metaphor for his main character who is in “the black” of his life, which is all at once the most dangerous place closest to the flames but also the safest zone where escapes are possible.

In appreciation for the work of the LAC Fire Department, Kamm uses his project to raise funds for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which honors and provides assistance and support to families of fallen or injured firefighters, and also educates the public on wildfire safety.

As a first time author but long time writer, Kamm knew the barriers that traditional publishing presents, “I think the publishing industry serves a very narrow category of authors. The catch 22 is that they won’t publish you if you haven’t been published already. Lulu is a great way to get started and become a published author,” says Kamm.   Excited by how well Lulu worked for him and the positive experience he had using the services they offer, Kamm is spreading the Lulu word and is also working on his second novel – still fire-themed but this time dealing with arson.
